Background The bacteria in the biofilm are always metabolically active, causing fluctuations in pH. These fluctuations may cause a loss of mineral from the tooth when the pH is dropping or a gain of mineral when the pH is increasing. The cumulative result of these de-and re-mineralization processes may be a net loss of mineral, leading to dissolution of the dental hard tissues and the formation of a caries lesion. Reason Oral biofilms develop under a range of different conditions and different enviroments. Most of the conditions under which oral biofilms develop tightly linked to overal health and biology of the host. Top Keywords Oral biofilms, periodontitis, atheroma, anti microbials mouth rinses.
