The study of cephalometric norms has been a part of orthodontic treatment for more than half a century. Steiner, Downs, Ricketts, Margolis, Tweed, Coben, Mc Namara, Ann Arbor and Sassouni have developed cephalometric analyses and corresponding norms. All these investigators formed an opinion that normal measurements for one group should not also be considered normal for other racial groups.

Cephalometric analysis aids in proper diagnosis and treatment planning of a orthodontic patients, norms for particular racial groups helps in more accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
