Abstract

Aim

To access the association of periodontal diseases in metabolic syndrome.

Background

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of diseases that include central obesity, impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes, hyperinsulinemia, hypertension and dyslipidemia. Metabolic syndrome is characterized by oxidative stress which promotes the pro inflammatory state. Periodontal disease is a chronic infectious disease characterized by loss of gingival insertion and bone resorption as a result of infection by periodontal pathogens. Periodontitis is associated with elevation of circulating levels of pro inflammatory cytokines involved in regulation of host response to tissue injury and infection. The pro inflammatory state may act as a common link to explain the relationship between each component of metabolic syndrome and periodontitis.

Reason

The reason is to gain knowledge about and to explore the various treatments.
