Online published on 12 February, 2013. Abstract In the present investigation, Cayratia trifolia (L.) Domin, folklore antidiabetic plant, has been evaluated for its hypoglycaemic activity. This activity was studied using the glucose uptake by isolated rat hemi-diaphragm in vitro model. The powdered root of this plant was successively extracted with petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and ethanol. Preliminary phytochemical investigations showed the presence of flavanoids in the ethanolic extract. This extract increased the uptake of glucose by isolated rat hemi-diaphragm significantly (P<0.05). It appears that the extract has direct peripheral action on glucose uptake. Results strongly suggested that C. trifolia has the potential for the treatment of diabetes mellitus caused in the consequences of resistance to stimulatory effect of insulin on GLUT-4 protein.
