Evaluation of functional outcome following open reduction and internal fixation of clavicle fractures with anatomical locking compression plate

Background: Fractures of the clavicle are common injuries seen in the Orthopaedic practice and various modalities of treatment are available in its management which include both conservative and surgical methods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional outcome following ORIF (Open reduction and internal fixation) of clavicle fractures with anatomical LCP (Locking compression plate). Methods: 30 patients with fractures of the clavicle who presented between January 2013 to January 2016 were treated by ORIF with LCP and were followed up for a 3year period. Functional assessment was done with the DASH (Disabilities of arm, shoulder and hand) and the Constant and Murley scores. Results: The mean age of the patients was 37.9 years and there was a male preponderance seen in our study with the right side being more commonly affected. The most common mode of injury was road traffic accidents and AO Type C was the most common fracture type seen. The DASH score improved from 18.43 at 6 months to 5.24 at 1 year which was statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion: Management of fractures of the clavicle with ORIF with LCP is an excellent treatment option which gives a stable and rigid internal fixation with preservation of the blood supply to the bone and aids in early mobilization of the shoulder leading to good functional outcomes.
