In-Vitro Anti-Oxidant Activity and Free Radical scavenging Potential of Alangium salvifolium seeds

Abstract

Alangium salvifolium, commonly known as Ankol tree. In Ayurveda, the roots and the fruits are used for the treatment of hemorrhoid and rheumatism. Traditionally the seeds Alangium salvifolium exhibit various activities including antimicrobial, anticancer, Antidiabetic, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, laxative, and antiepileptic activity. The main objective of the present work is to establish the pharmacological potential of Alangium salvifolium seeds in terms of its phytochemical composition and anti-oxidant potential. In order to fulfill the objectives of proposed work, three different types of extracts viz, aqueous, hydro-alcoholic and alcoholic extracts of Alangium salvifolium seeds were prepared using Soxhlet extraction technique and cold maceration technique respectively. The extracts were subjected to qualitative phytochemical analysis. The TLC was performed for the three extracts and the alcoholic extract was further carried out for preparative TLC and fractions were separated as B1, B2, B3, B4 and B5 which shows the presence of alkaloids, glycosides and steroids. All the extracts and fractions were subjected to anti-oxidant activity by three different assays that are DPPH scavenging activity, Hydrogen peroxide activity and Reducing capacity assay and % inhibition was observed in all three extracts and five fractions of alcoholic. The present study provides qualitative phytochemical analysis and anti-oxidant potential of Alangium salvifolium seeds.
