Abstract

Quercetin has a wide array of pharmacological properties such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Scientific study has indicated that quercetin possesses protective effects against toxic agents in several tissues, including brain, lung, heart, liver, kidney, etc. This review aims to identify the protective effects of quercetin against respiratory toxic agents. The scientific databases such as MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar from 1990 to present was searched to identify online scientific literatures about antidotal and protective effects of quercetin against respiratory toxic agents. The keywords for the search were: quercetin, toxic agents, and respiratory disease. This study found that quercetin had protective activities against toxic agents-induced respiratory damages by modulating oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis pathways. Nicotine, ovalbumin (OVA), lipopolysaccharide (LPS), Bleomycin, carbon tetra chloride (CCL4), parquat (PQ) and chlorpyrifos (Cr) are some examples of chemical agents and drugs which quercetin could protect respiratory system against their toxicities. However, more studies should be done to confirm the safety of quercetin as antidote agents in human. Based on the present findings, quercetin has an extensive spectrum of protective effects against toxicities induced by either natural or chemical toxic agents. As these data have not yet been confirmed by clinical trials on human, to indicate the antidotal effects of quercetin in human intoxications, human trials should be done. Thus, quercetin may be act as a toxic agent; however, more several studies should be desgined to evalute the safety and efficacy of quercetin.
