Abstract

The “Desert Cotton” plant- Aerva javanica Linn. (Amaranthaceae), is traditionally reported to be used for removal of swelling, pain and pyrexia. Analgesic potential was assessed using tail flick method, Pyrexia was induced in using yeast induced pyrexia model, response on inflammation of extracts was evaluated using carrageenan for acute involvement and chronic arthritis was studied using CFA induced arthritis model. Complete hydroalcoholic extract (AJCE) was used in 250 and 500 mg/kg BW dose and ethyl acetate fraction (AJEAF) was used in 250 mg/kg BW dose. In analgesic model (tail flick method), maximum possible effect (% MPE) obtained was AJEAF (22.42%) and AJCE (500 mg/kg BW) (21.16%). AJCE (250 mg/kg BW) fraction showed MPE even less than 10%. Antipyretic potential (by yeast induced pyrexia) was not found prominent with maximum effect shown by AJEAF. Acute anti-inflammatory potential (by carrageenan induced paw edema) expressed as % inhibition was 38.68% (6 hours) for AJCE (250 mg/kg BW), 41.80% (3 hours) for AJCE (500 mg/kg BW) and maximum was 54.25% (6 hours) for AJEAF treatment. Sub-acute inhibition of chronic arthritis in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) model, was shown maximum by AJEAF with 25.97% inhibition and chronic inhibition was also shown by AJEAF with 22.55% inhibition followed by AJCE (500 mg/kg BW) with 16.95% and 13.35% inhibition respectively. Ethyl acetate fraction showed better results in all activities. Further, more purification and isolation from fraction is needed to exploit better potential in all three activities.
