Online published on 24 August, 2018. Abstract Objective Simple, sensitive and extractive-free spectrophotometric methods have been developed for the determination of cefpodoxime Proxetil (CFP) both in pure and in pharmaceutical forms. Methods Two spectrophotometric methods are based on the formation of yellow colored ion-pair complexes between CFP and two sulphonphthalein acid dyes, bromocresol purpule (BCP)(method A) and Bromocresol green (BCG) (method B) with maximum absorption at 411 and 417 nm, respectively. Results The optimal analytical conditions were determined for both methods A and B. The obtained complexes (BCP: CFP, BCG: CFP) reached maximum absorbance directly after formation at room temperature for a stability period of 3h. Beer's law was obeyed in the concentration ranges of (2–56) μg/ml for method A and (2–52) μg/ml for method B, the limits of detection were 0.316 and 0.287 μg/ml and the molar absorptivity coefficients were 1, 91*104 and 2, 08*104 L.moL−1.cm−1for method A and B respectively. Conclusion The proposed methods were successfully validated to be utilized in the quantitative analysis of CFP in its pure and pharmaceutical products. The results of the developed methods showed high compatibility with the results obtained from official reference method, which ascertain the negligible effects of excipients in both methods A and B.
