Medicinal plants are nature's gift to human beings to lead a disease-free, healthy life and play a vital role in preserving our health. Polyalthia longifolia(PL) belonging to Annonaceae family has been used in the traditional system of medicine to cure various disorders. The use of plant extracts and isolated compound/s has provided basis in the preparation of modern pharmaceutical medicines. The plant has its utility in skin diseases, diabetes, hypertension and helminthiasis as well as vitiated conditions of vataand pitta.Phytochemical screening of PL petroleum ether extract of seeds has revealed the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, carbohydrates, steroids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, fats and oils, and terpenoids. The presence of these components enhances the effectiveness of plants essential oil in treating various diseases.
The purpose of Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) studies on PL seeds petroleum ether extract was to explicate phytoconstituents which may prove its effectiveness in near future in the treatment of various disorders.
Materials and Methods
Present research studies encompasses identification of chemical constituents in PL seeds petroleum ether extracts by hyphenated techniques such as Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) and identified by matching mass spectra with mass spectrum libraries.
There were five different compounds present such as16-Hentriacontanone, Squalene, n-Hexadecanoic acid, Trans-13-octadecenoic acid, 9-octadecenoic acid (Z)-, 2-hydroxy-1-(hydroxymethyl)ethyl ester.
The present article on PL seed extract probably would help the phytochemistry field to focus more on identification, isolation and characterization of the essential oils which could have ethnopharmacological potential in future.
