Abstract Periodontal diseases are a group of inflammatory disorders that are caused by pathogenic bacteria in the sub gingival biofilm leading to association with impaired host immune response and connective tissue breakdown. There has been substantial evidence for the central role played by cytokine networks in periodontal diseases of which interleukin 1 has a significant role in periodontal disease pathogenesis.
