Abstract

Background/Objectives

The purpose of this study is to find effects of probiotics on counts of oral microorganisms, salivary mutans streptococci (MS) and lactobacilli (LB).

Methods/Statistical analysis

A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study design with two parallel arms was employed to carry out our study. Clincal Investigator were enrolled for 4 weeks of a treatment period and randomly allocated to either a probiotics or placebo group. Subjects in the test group were instructed to ingest probiotics once a day while the other subjects in the placebo group to ingest without probiotics. Dental plaque, salivary MS (mutans streptococci, S. mutans) and LB (lactobacilli) levels were recorded during the test period of time.

Findings

Studies started with both test and placebo groups from 0 week. Both groups took part in 4 weeks of this study and showed no significant differences in buffering ability, quantity or pH of saliva. But, a CRT bacterial test (P < 0.05) showed that counts of S. mutans decreased significantly after 4 weeks of intake. On the contrary, lactobacilli (LB) counting revealed a more increasing pattern, resulting from intake of probiotics. This study suggests that probiotics could suppress counts of S. mutans, which causes dental cavity.

Improvements/Applications

Our results strongly showed that counts of caries-causing S. mutans were reduced with probiotics intake, and dental caries were lessened.
