Development of multi drug resistance to available anti microbial agent requires the search for new and alternative drug entities. The aim of the study is to assess the antimicrobial activity and to determine the zone of inhibition and percentage of inhibition of extracts on some bacterial and fungal strains. In the present study, the microbial activity of crude ethanolic extract and isolated compound I and II of root bark of Crataeva magna Lour DC (an ethno medicinal plant) was evaluated for potential antimicrobial activity against medically important bacterial and fungal strains. Phytochemical screening of root bark of Crataeva magna Lour DC was done as per the accepted international protocol so as to ascertain the possible presence of alkaloid, carbohydrate, tannin, Saponin, terpenoid, flavonoid, Coumarin and phenol The antimicrobial activity was determined in the extracts using agar disc diffusion method and food poison technique method. Antibacterial potential of extracts were assessed in terms of zone of inhibition of bacterial growth. The bacterial strains Staphylococcus aureus Gram (+), Escherichia coli Gram (−) shows the good zone of inhibition in both crude ethanolic extract (14 mm) and isolated compound I (12mm) in the dilution of 2000 ppm in replicate manner. Agar well diffusion and broth dilution methods were used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The minimum inhibitory concentration against E.coli by compound 1 was found to be 1000 ppm and by compound 2 was found to be 2000 ppm. For anti fungal activity the crude ethanol extracts only 25% inhibition against Candida albicans. The other isolated compound I and II have no inhibition against Aspergillus sp and Candida albicans.
