Pharmacognostical Profile and In-vitro Antihelmenthic Study of Madhuca longifolia Linn., Against Pheritima posthuma

Abstract

The plant Madhuca longifolia Linn. belonging to the family Sopteacae, is a ever green plant involved in the ethics of traditional healers for treatment of various alignments. The present study was carried out to investigate morphological, microscopical, physicochemical and phytochemical and invitro anthelmenthic screening of the leaf part of the plant. Morphological studies of leaves, showed the presence of various diagnostic characters. In the microscopical studies, leaves showed the presence of fibrous vascular bundle, palisade, paracytic stomata, Prismatic calcium oxalate, oil cells, starch grains etc. Ash value, extractive value and moisture content was determined for quality standard of drugs. Phytochemical investigation shows the presence of flavanoids, glycosides, starch phenol, phytosterol, saponin and tannins. The In-vitro anthelmenthic activity was done on Pheritima posthuma due to its anatomical similarity with intestinal round worms. The methanolic leaf extract was taken in a concentration of (10,20,50 mg/ml) poured in 25ml petridish against albendazole as standard drug. The extract at a dose of 50mg/ml exhibited significant activity in lesser time interval
