Abstract This study aims at assessing the modern institution of Old Age Home located in Shillong with reference to the background of the people who have chosen to live there for diverse reasons. The study is based on personal interview of some of the elderly persons currently living in the Home with regard to circumstances leading them to choose the Old Age Home and not depending on the institution of family that has long been considered as the most important institution supporting the aged.
