Abstract Ce3+and Eu2+ co-doped LaMgAl11O19, hexaaluminate phosphor has been successfully synthesized by one step combustion synthesis method using mixture of two fuels. Photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra are investigated in detail. Ce3+ and Eu2+activated phosphors show emission bands at 350 nm and 445 nm respectively in ultraviolet and blue region. Energy transfer behavior is observed from Ce3+ to Eu2+, which yields intense blue color emission at 445 nm. Concentration Quenching due to dipole-dipole interaction is observed. Maximum intensity of co-doped LaMgAl11O19 phosphor is obtained at 5 mole% of Cerium and 3 mole% of Europium. The CIE chromaticity of LAM: Ce3+, Eu2+ phosphor was compared with the commercial BAM. LaMgAl11O19, rare earth activated phosphor has potential candidate for UV LED, white LED and UV LASERs.
