Abstract

The advancement of Information Technology and erratic use of Internet and Web Technologies in manifold directions have altered the horizons of library services and their scenario in Indian academic libraries. Librarians and library professionals are facing financial problems when implementing new technology applications in Indian library services due to libraries being non-profit organizations. Open Source Software (OSS) presents a solution to these issues. Open Source Software refers to computer software programs in which the source code is available on the internet for the general public domain, and it is licensed as free software. This allows users to have the right to read, modify, use it freely, and redistribute the program according to their needs, as well as to develop new code that improves OSS applications. OSS for library automation provides better quality software and tools with higher reliability and flexibility, all free of cost. Thus, OSS holds great importance for academic libraries in developing countries like India. Open source library automation software differs from closed source or proprietary software. However, library professionals should be aware of open source software’s involvement in library development. Unfortunately, library professionals often do not seriously consider the future challenges of open source software applications and are therefore reluctant to use it. Additionally, they may lack the expertise to support open source software for library automation in Indian academic libraries. This paper highlights the major future challenges and applications of OSS for library automation, as well as their important features.
