Studies on combining ability for yield and its contributing traits in smooth gourd (Luffa cylindrica Roem.)

The present study was carried out to find the combining ability of smooth gourd for fruit yield and yield related traits. Fifteen hybrids of smooth gourd were developed through crossing of six parents of smooth gourd in half diallel fashion. The analysis of variance for combining ability showed that the mean sum of squares due to general combining ability and specific combining ability were significant for all the characters such as days to first male flower anthesis, node number of first male flower, days to first female flower anthesis, node number of first female flower, fruit length, fruit weight, number of fruits per plant, number of primary branches, main vine length and total yield. The GCA mean squares were larger in magnitude than SCA mean squares except fruit weight, number of fruit per plant, number of primary branches, main vine length and total yield. The parents, PSG-07-04, PSG-115 and PSG-199 were found to be good general combiners. Therefore, these parents can be exploited for hybridization for producing desirable recombinants in the segregating generation. High SCA effects for yield and other traits were exhibited by the crosses PSG-82 × PSG-07-04, PSG-07-04 × PSG-161 and PSG-07-04 × PSG-199.
