Production, storability and nutrient uptake of kharif onion (Allium cepa L.) as influenced by the application of potassic fertilizer and Azolla in field

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at vegetable farm of Bihar Agricultural College, Sabour, Bhagalpur during the year 2016 to examine the effect of potassium and its substitution by Azolla on production and nutrient uptake of kharif onion. Harvested onion bulbs were stored for 90 days under well aerated room conditions during the year 2016 -17 to study the effect of treatments on storability of kharif onion. Application of potassium at the rate of 60 Kg ha-1 through chemical fertilizer in combination with 30Kg K2O ha-1 through Azolla increased the bulb yield by 19.77 % than that obtained with 60Kg K2O ha-1 alone through chemical fertilizer. Levels and sources of potassium also influenced storability of onion bulbs. Rotting percentage of bulbs obtained from plot treated with 30 Kg K2O ha-1 after 60 days of storage was 60.24%, however, that in bulbs obtained from field treated with 60 Kg K2O ha-1 through chemical fertilizer + 30 Kg K2O ha-1 through Azolla (Treatment- T3) was only 46.24 %. Rotting percentage in bulbs obtained from plots treated with 60 Kg K2O ha-1 during this storage period was 58.48%. N, P and K uptake by onion crop treated with T3 were 63.16 Kg ha-1, 12.45 Kg ha-1 and 69.83 Kg ha-1, respectively. However, N, P and K uptake by crop treated with 60 Kg K2O ha-1 were only 45.14 Kg ha-1, 8.94 Kg ha-1 and 59.21 Kg ha-1, respectively.
