Abstract

Arhar (pigeon pea) and moong are the two most important pulses grown and consumed in Bihar. Milling of pulses i.e., dal milling in India is largely at cottage or village level where it is done by stone grinding or by flour mill. In this traditional mill dal recovery is 65–73 percent. At commercial level, abrasive roller mills are most common. Poor recovery and loss in form of powder and breakage are major draw back of presently process in the direction of rectification of this problem. Keeping in view the importance of this test, the performance evaluation of the mini dal mill was carried out to study the effect of grain and machine parameters on milling quality of Arhar and find out the milling efficiency of the machine as affected by injtial moisture content of arhar and feed rate of the mill. Cleaned, ground and pre treated lot of arhar were milled in the same automatic mini dal mill at 3 different feed rates of the machine and at 3 levels of moisture content of pulse. The percent recovery of dal from the mill increases with increase in the feed rate of the machine keeping the moisture level constant. Highest dal recovery was achieved when arhar was milled at 10.25 percent as compared to 9.7 and 12.1 percent. Milling efficiency of the mill also increased with increase in feed rate of machine at constant moisture content. Maximum machine efficiency was obtained full feed rate i.e., 76.86 kg/h. As far as brokens are concerned, an increase in brokens was seen with decrease in moisture content. Least percent of brokens was observed when pulses fed to machine had 10.25 percent. An increase in percentage of broken was observed with decrease in feed rates.
