Abstract A field experiment was conducted on medium black calcareous soils of Inceptisols, Entisols belonging to Sawargaon (vertic ustrocrept) and paragaon (Typic ustrothent) soil series to evaluate the response of chickpea to potassium levels with and/or without farmyard manure in shrink-swell soil series. The results indicated that Inceptisol showed highest growth parameters,1000-grain weight and straw yield (30.01 q ha−1) followed by entisol (39.69 q ha−1) and vertisol (21.87 q ha−1). 1000-grain weight and protein content in chickpea was significantly increased by application of 5 t FYM ha−1 also by application of 90 and 75 kg K2O ha−1 alone.
