Abstract Forensic odontology is a science resulting in the overlap of the dental and legal professions. Dental professionals are compelled by law and duty to produce and maintain adequate patient records. Forensic odontologists are frequently called upon to identify the remains of the individuals who cannot be identified easily. In modern era it becomes imperative to bring the criminals to justice and provide valuable supporting evidences to the court. The aim of the article is to discuss the salient features of good record maintenance, record retention and the use of dental records in forensic identifications.
