Measuring Information Literacy Skill: A Case Study of Post-graduate Students of Khwopa College, Bhaktapur (Nepal)

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of information literacy on academic performance of post-graduate students of Environment Science of Khwopa College, Bhaktapur (Nepal). It aimed to examine the searching capabilities on searching online databases and to know students’ knowledge on organizing the information that students had retrieved. Here a practical study was conducted to investigate skills on information literacy among post-graduate students. Out of 23 students and faculty members, 13 students of Environment Science at Khwopa College, Bhaktapur were taken for this study purpose. They were asked pre-test and post-test questions. After having their pre-test response, a two days training was conducted on online database searching and Mendeley reference management software was taught. These two topics were taught within one week difference, so that students’ get time for practice. Soon after training, the students were made to fill post-test questionnaire. Data was collected from the answer sheets of these participants. All 13 students filled the questionnaire. From the data analysis, it was derived that t-test for paired samples between result of pre-test and post-test (p = 0.02) supported students obtained good knowledge on information literacy and use in their work after the information literacy training. They understood better about information sources (by 100%) and made improvement in information searching. Moreover they learnt the organization and management of information sources. However the study showed students got difficulties in exploiting search strategy tool; hence need further training for them on search strategy. College library must provide better information services that support information literacy for college students.
