Abstract Institutional Repositories are recognized as the essential infrastructure with the mechanism to store, preserve, identify and retrieve the intellectual collections including research output of the academic communities of a single institution or multi-institutions in digital form which play a crucial role in the research life cycle. IRs are becoming prevalent in the academic sector with the rapid changes in technology, scholarly practices and patron expectations. Academic institutions are grappling to create functional IRs to facilitate the growth in teaching, learning and research. UGC (2005) in India has already developed a policy document on building Digital Repositories at University Level. National Knowledge Commission (2007) strongly advocated archiving research literature for building nation wide Institutional Repository. This paper tries to explore the actual scenario of Institutional Repositories in different R&D libraries of Kolkata and surrounding areas.
