Towards the Promotion of a Credible Reading Culture: A Case Study of some South Western States in Nigeria Iyiade A K1, Acquisition Librarian, Adekunmisi S R1, Gift and Exchange Librarian 1Olabisi Onabanjo University Library, Ago-Owoye, Ogun State, Nigeria. Abstract This paper examines reading as a habit and the need to encourage the habit among our teeming population in Nigeria and also discusses the problems associated with reading. A total of 710 copies of a questionnaire were administered to civil servants in Ogun, Oyo and Osun State while 635 copies were returned constituting 89.43% response rate. Analysis of the returned questionnaires shows that economic hardship, illiteracy, low level of government involvement in the implementation of a credible reading habit and inadequate functional libraries among others militate against life-long reading habit. The paper offers suggestions and recommendations on how to promote and sustain reading habit in the Nigeri an populace. Top | |
