Abstract

Developing and maintaining Digital Libraries require substantial investments that are not simply a matter of technological decisions but also include organizational issues. While digital libraries hold a lot of promise both now and for the future, they have been slow in taking off. Some digital libraries have either been completely abandoned or they have been put on hold indefinitely. One of the reasons for this predicament is that developers of digital libraries have approached their implementation in the traditional way of building applications, which is also akin to the way structures of physical information organizations are built. However, service-oriented architecture (SOA) offers a better approach to building digital libraries, including streamlining business components, employing re-usable services and connecting existing applications to communicate efficiently and effectively. The objective of this paper is to design a SOA for Digital Library System (DLS) using Web Service technology and SOA. This architecture is called SADLS and this architecture includes different layers which provide primitive services to the library applications built on top of the Digital Library System (DLS). Techniques of personalization, alert and caching are explicitly included in SADLS as services in order to fill the gap existing between traditional applications and DLS. This architecture provides fast, safe, convenient and efficient services to users connected through Internet.
