Abstract

In order to use fertilizers for wheat in spatially variable soils economically and to avoid environmental pollution, it is required that large scale spatial patterns in soil properties and crop productivity should be assessed. With this point of view, spatial variability of soil properties, and wheat yields measured at 15 m interval on three 655 m long transects in complex hills of the Palouse region of eastern Washington was studied using classical and geo-statistics. Soil properties and wheat yields had a coefficient of variation from about 8 to 49% and 21%, respectively. Three dimensional plots of soil properties and wheat yields showed that the variation was not random and these variables had spatial patterns. Semivariograms showed a strong spatial dependence in the distribution of soil properties, and wheat yields with a range of influence of 123 to 233 m, and 115 to 160 m, respectively. These results suggest that this farm should not be fertilized with single uniform rate of fertilizer. The alternative fertility management strategy of variable rates of fertilizer to match spatial patterns of soil properties and crop productivity was developed. The variable rates of N conserved the fertilizer resources, gave maximum economic yields and minimized the potential of contaminating surface and ground water.
