Abstract

A green-house experiment was conducted to study S × Zn interaction in groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) using a Zn deficient soil. Groundnut shoot and pod yields were considerably increased with supplemental Zn application. The magnitude of response was more in pods than in shoot. Sulphur application alone did not show detrimental effect on plant growth. Application of 30 ppm S in combination with Zn depressed dry-matter yield as compared to application of Zn only. Tissue S and Zn concentrations increased with their supplemental applications and decreased with enhanced maturity particularly in the absence of their supplemental applications. Probably a large proportion of both S and Zn in groundnut were taken up after the initiation of flowering. The build-up in tissue Zn concentration was much more than S concentration. Application of one of the two nutrients depressed the concentration of the other nutrient in shoot. Indications were that S-Zn interaction perhaps occurred both at absorption sites and within plants.
