Life and Work of S R Ranganathan: Revolutionary Impact on Knowledge Management

1Nayana Nair, a recipient of UGC Junior Research Fellowship in Library and Information Science, took her Master’s degree in Library and Information science from Tata Institute of Social Sciences with gold medal. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in English (Hons) from the English and Foreign Languages University. At Capital Centre Library, Central University of Kerala, she was involved in the development of IRKnowledgebase, a portal and archive on International Relations. She also served as the Digital Library Coordinator for the Indian Public Library Movement Project at P.N. Panicker Foundation supported by NASSCOM and IPLM. Presently She is pursuing research on Big Data at School of International Relations, MG University, India.

Abstract

S R Ranganathans’ life was a symbol of immortality. Dedicating his fall life to the subject - Library and Information Science he left a rich legacy, through his original contributions, innovative ideas and new knowledge, to endow it with content and meaning that could meet the challenge of all times. The integral nature of Ranganathans’ theory emerged from occasional intuition; and his intellect strove to make it more explicit to the rational mind of the scientific worker. There is much to be learned from Ranganathan. Even though he was born in economically weak family in a remote village with no facilites for education and hindered with hardships he could overcome all this by his hard work. Author presents here a short biography of Ranganathan with stress to his contributions in academic and professional areas of Library and Information Science. Selected rare photographs included immortalize moments in his life.
