Abstract

Enzymes that have found broad industrial, therapeutic and medical applications can be leveraged to catalyze diverse reactions taking place in the human body and in turn treat various diseases and ailments. Techniques such as genetic engineering and enzyme immobilization have further facilitated an evolution of enzymes in vitro. Production of enzymes using GRAS microorganisms has also gained wide spread acceptance which has resulted in a greater availability of enzymes for various therapeutic purposes such as treating digestive disorders, treatment of cancer, as defibrillating agents, lysis of bacterial and yeast cells, treatment of gout, diabetes, heart diseases and cyanide poisoning.
