Abstract

Farmers in rural areas of Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh make use of indigenous practices in order of their importance with certain rationale. All of them preferred to make use of indigenous practices in goat, health care and ranked it as the first in order of importance. The next preferred area to make use of indigenous practices was goat breeding and reproduction (73.33%) followed by goat feeding (46.67%), goat marketing (26.67%), goat housing and shelter management (20%) and goat products making (13.33%). The goat husbandry practitioners were practicing indigenous practices due to certain reasons mainly, related to socia-psychological, economic, access to resources, etc. This indicates that much attention was paid to economic loss due to health hazards, to have quality and well maintained animals for obtaining maximum profit while selling them.
