Effects of NPK and boron on yield and quality of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in Lithic Haplustalf soil of East Singhbhum

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at Zonal Research Station, Darisai, Jharkhand on fine loamy, mixed, Hyperthermic Lithic Haplustalf soil, so as to evaluate the effect of graded levels of NPK and Boron on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) for two consecutive years 2003–04 and 2004–05. The treatments included three levels of NPK (50, 75 and 100 per cent of recommended dose) as well as boron i.e. @ 0, 0.5 and 1.0 kg ha−1. The result indicated that the application of NPK and B remitted significant increase in grain and straw yields of wheat. Application of 100% NPK increased the grain yield to an extent of 71.6% over 50% NPK and was statistically at par with 75% NPK level. Soil application of B @ 0.5 kg ha−1 was found at par with 1kg B ha−1 in increasing crop yield and nutrient removal by crop. Although the interaction effect was non significant however, in comparison to control, all the treatment combinations responded significantly. Boron uptake by the crop was appreciably increased with the increasing levels of boron however, recovery decreased with the increasing levels. Significant build up of available boron content in soil was found after two years of experimentation.
