Skill development regarding self administration of Insulin injection among Diabetes mellitus patients

Abstract

India has become the new diabetic capital of the world, and the prevalence of diabetes is rising at an alarming rate. Insulin is the mainstay of treatment. The nurse must teach the skill of administration of insulin irrespective of expressing the difficulty or fear of insulin by patients. The purpose of the study is to develop skill regarding self administration of insulin injection among diabetic patients through demonstration and teaching booklet. The operational research design was adopted to evaluate the effectiveness of protocol regarding self administration of insulin injection among diabetic patients in Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital, Ram Nagar, Rajpura, District Patiala, Punjab. The study population included all Type I and Type II diabetes mellitus patients those who were self administering insulin injection and attending outpatient medicine department of Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital, Ram Nagar, Rajpura, District Patiala, Punjab. Sample size was 72. Data collection tool included socio demographic data and self structured knowledge questionnaire consisting 20 dichotomous questions regarding self administration of insulin injection. Protocol was prepared which included demonstration and information booklet regarding self administration of insulin injection. Observational checklist included 30 steps was used to assess the skill of the diabetes mellitus patients. Reliability and validity of tool was checked. After taking consent, Knowledge and skill of patients were assessed. Individually demonstration and teaching booklet was given to the diabetes mellitus patients. Re demonstration post test observation was done of each diabetic patient after one week by using observation checklist until they become proficient. Obtained data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS 17th version. Post 1 observation (11.8%) was statistically significant (p≤0.05) performance score than pre implementation observation (7.0%). Post 2 observations (30.0%) of patients had statistically significant (p≤0.00) than pre and post 1 observation. Protocol regarding self administration of insulin injection was effective to improve skill of diabetes mellitus patients.
