A Comparative Study: Assess the Nutritional Status of Toddlers among Urban Area and Rural area

Abstract

Today's children are tomorrow's world or tomorrow's father” this slogan is riding a massive wave of concern throughout the world. Hunger and malnutrition make them worst sufferers and these pose potential threats to mankind as a whole or to the civilization itself. According to Gujarat Demographic and Health Survey (20132014), there is 13.6% malnourished child in rural Gujarat and 6.5% malnourished child in urban Gujarat. The underweight prevalence rate is 59% of toddlers.1

Purpose

The purpose of the study was to compare the nutritional status among toddlers of urban area and rural area.

Methods

A Quantitative, Comparative research design was used in this study. Total 200 toddlers were taken as a sample and data was collected by Semi-Structured Questionnaire, Standard WHO Growth charts, Weight Scale, Measuring Tape and MUAC Tape. The validity of the tools was 89.10%. Interrater reliability method was used to check the reliability and it was 0.690. The data were collected by interview and observation and assessment of the sample. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data.

Result and Discussion

The data were analyzed and interpreted in terms of objectives of the study. Descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized for the data analysis. From the findings, it was concluded that the Nutritional status of the urban toddlers were higher than the rural toddlers and it was found that the variables like educational status of parents, exclusive breast feeding practice, number of sibling, quantity of diet of toddlers had positive effect on Nutritional status of the toddlers.
