Effect of Valsalva maneuver on perception of pain during Intravenous (IV) Cannulation

Pain is inevitable but suffering is optional. It is a universal human experience. Procedure related pain could be worse than that of the illness itself. Nurses are in the key position to find out and utilize newer measures to reduce pain related to procedures like IV cannulation. The present study was undertaken to assess the effect of Valsalva maneuver on perception of pain among patients during intravenous (IV) cannulation in a selected hospital, Kerala. The objectives of the study were to assess the level of pain during IV cannulation without Valsalva Maneuver (control group), assess the level of pain during IV cannulation with Valsalva Maneuver (experimental group), compare the level of pain between control group and experimental group, determine the association between pain and selected baseline variable such as age, sex, size of the cannula and previous experience of IV cannulation.. An evaluative approach was use with a quasi experimental post test only control group design. The study was conducted among adults (30–60 yrs) those who received IV cannulation. Using nonpropability purposive sampling methods 60 patients were selected as a sample. Frequency, percentage, paired ‘t’ test and fisher's exact test were used to analyze the study. Study findings revealed that Mean pain score in control group (7.53) was found significantly higher than the pain score in experimental group (3.33). The ‘t’ value was 11.81 (p-0.000) which indicated that Valsalva maneuver was effective to reduce pain during IV cannulation.
