A Study to Assess the Knowledge and Effect of Nomophobia among Nursing Students of selected Nursing Colleges in Mysore

Abstract

Nomophobia is a common type of problem seen among youths. Descriptive study was adopted. 60 nursing students were selected by convenience sampling technique tools were used for the data collection i.e. personal proforma and structured questionnaire. The study finding revealed that the majority 35 (58.4%) of Nursing students had average knowledge, 22 (36.6%) had poor knowledge and only 3 (5%) had good knowledge regarding nomophobia. The mean knowledge score regarding nomophobia is 7.5 with the SD of ± 1.4 ranged from 3–17.

Introduction

Mobile phones were originally seen as a gadget for communication but currently, the internet enabled mobile phones have become an integral part of our daily life. Their benefits are incomparable but at the same time, they have some negative effects too.

Aims

To assess the knowledge regarding nomophobia among nursing students.

Methodology

Study was descriptive in nature and sample size was 60 Nursing students. Non probability convenience sampling technique was used to select the samples. The data collection was done by administering structured knowledge questionnaire regarding nomophobia among nursing students. Data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Results

The study finding revealed that the majority 30 (50%) of Nursing students had poor knowledge, 25 (41.6%) had average knowledge and only 5 (8.3%) had good knowledge regarding nomophobia. The mean knowledge score regarding nomophobia is 7.5 with the SD of ± 1.4 ranged from 3–17.

Conclusion

The following conclusion was drawn on the basis of the findings of the study. This study shows that there was average knowledge regarding nomophobia among Nursing students. So it is recommended that there is a need for conducting awareness programme among Nursing students regarding nomophobia.
