Abstract

Ageing is a normal, biological and universal phenomenon, and occurs in a unique manner in every individual. It's a multi faceted process in which the individual's functional and health status are influenced by variety of factors like the genetic and environmental factors. Emerging changes in the social and cultural values, elderly who are economically unproductive are commonly neglected. It is recognized that the elderly are prone to develop various chronic physical, emotional and psychiatric disorders. Given the rate of population ageing that developing countries like India are experiencing, there is a need to focus on ageing related issues and to initiate appropriate measures for the improvement of health status and quality of life of elderly. However the needs and problems of elderly vary significantly based on their age, socio economic condition, and health and living status. Along with medical treatment, there is a need for the preventive and promotive strategies to be viewed as important facet of caring for elderly to have a successful aging as well as improve wellbeing and quality of life, where the access to quality and affordable health care is limited. The elderly do not need sympathy, but they essentially require an understanding, love, support and care with human touch. The reviews discuss the existing literature on elderly, and present a critical appraisal and update on quality of life of elderly including the strategies for improving the quality of life.
