Abstract

Effect of planned teaching programme on knowledge and practices in relation to selected aspects of tuberculosis among patients diagnosed with tuberculosis.

The Objectives

  1. To assess the knowledge in relation to selected aspects of tuberculosis before and after planned teaching programme among patients diagnosed with tuberculosis.

  2. To assess the practices in relation to selected aspects of tuberculosis before and after planned teaching programme among patients diagnosed with tuberculosis.

  3. To find out the relationship between post test knowledge and post test practices in relation to selected aspects of tuberculosis among patients diagnosed with tuberculosis.

The study is based on Imogene King's Goal Attainment Theory. A Descriptive Evaluative approach with quasi experimental one group pre testpost test design was adopted. Patients with tuberculosis (n=30) fulfilling inclusion criteria were selected by Non Probability Convenience sampling method. A Structured Interview Schedule was used to collect the demographic data and to assess knowledge practices. Content validity of the tool was done with the help of experts and reliability by test-retest method using Karl Pearson's Correlation coefficient formula. A Pilot study followed by actual data collection was done during the period, 24/10/2011 to 10/12/2011.

Patients diagnosed with tuberculosis were given a pretest followed by the teaching programme and a post test was administered after five to eight days. One point ivteaching on an individual basis for 20 to 25 minutes was provided. Data was tabulated and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.

The findings revealed that planned teaching is effective in improving the knowledge and practices in relation to selected aspects of tuberculosis and have implications for nursing practice, nursing education, administration and research.
