Effectiveness of structured teaching programme on adverse effects of junk foods among mothers in selected rural area, Kollam

In a society that functions at a high speed, fast food has quickly been adopted as the preferred food of choice. Junk food have gained so much popularity because of the nice taste and easy to cook. Most of the people depend on such readymade foods because of their busy schedule. Most of the junk foods are rich in fats and poor in other nutrients. The common junk foods include fast foods, chips, candies, gums, sweet deserts as well as alcoholic beverages. Keeping this in mind, a quantitative one group pre test-post test study was undertaken to assess the effectivevenss of structured teaching programme on adverse effects of junk foods among mothers in selected rural area, kollam. The objectives of the study are toassess the knowledge level of mothers regarding adverse effects of junk foods using STP.
One group pre test post test research design was adopted for the present study. The study was conducted to collect the data among 60 mothers in selected rural area, Kollam. A structured questionnaire was given to collect the data. The samples were collected by using purposive sampling technique and the collected data was analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics.
The major findings of the study were, the demographic variables such as education and occupation had significant association with pretest knowledge regarding adverse effects of junk foods and the study was effective. In the present study the result shows that the mean of pretest knowledge scores of mothers regarding adverse effects of junk food was 6.88 and SD was 2.24 and mean of post test was 17.08 and SD was 2.09. The calculated ‘t'value 41.92, is greater than table value 2 at 0.05 level of significance. The study also revealsthat there is significant effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge of mothers regarding adverse effects of junk foods.
The study concluded that there was a significant gain in knowledge among mothers following a structured teaching programme
