Abstract

Variability studies in 15 rice varieties revealed that there were considerable differences in the influence of different spacing on the expression of yield and grain quality characters except L/B ratio and panicle length. Correlation studies showed that selection can be practiced for number of productive tillers per plant, number of grains per panicle, L/B ratio and 100 rice grain weight as these characters manifested positive and significant correlation with grain yield in all the three spacings. A significant relationship between amylose content and gel consistency was also observed. Path coefficient analysis revealed that the characters number of productive tillers per plant, number of grains per panicle, L/B ratio and 100 rice grain weight were found to be the main contributors to grain yield in all the three different spacings.
