Effectiveness of Structured-Teaching Programme on Knowledge and Attitude regarding Scabies among mothers of under-five children

Scabies is a common dermatological, highly pruritic infestation of the skin caused by ‘Sarcopetes scabei’. It's a very contagious parasitosis with specific lesions. It spreads through close contact. Scabies has been known since ancient times. Research on scabies has historically been limited because of the difficulty in obtaining sufficient numbers of causative organism. Recent molecular approaches have enabled substantial advances in the study of population genetics and transmission dynamics of Sarcoptes scabiei. Since India is the second largest country due to population explosion, there is an increased chance of getting such skin disorders easily in our country. Therefore, a number of studies had been conducted regarding scabies in India. Hospitals, child-care centers and nursing homes are more prone for getting skin disorders. A pre experimental study was conducted to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding scabies. The sample comprises 50 mothers of hospitalized underfive children who met with the inclusion criteria. Convenience sampling technique was used for the study. A Structured Interview Questionnaire was used to assess knowledge and attitude. The pretest was conducted, followed by a Structured Teaching Programme which was given to the mothers for 1 hour on scabies. After 4 days the posttest was conducted and the outcome in terms of knowledge and attitude towards scabies was evaluated by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study revealed that the knowledge on scabies before the structuredteaching programme was inadequate-38%, moderately adequate was-62%, and adequate was nil. After the structured teaching programme, the knowledge has improved with adequate-90%, moderately adequate-10% and inadequate-nil level of knowledge. A total of 48(96%) mothers had moderately favorable attitude regarding scabies, and only 2(4%) mothers had favorable attitude regarding scabies on pre-test. Attitude on scabies after the structured-teaching programme was, favorable 100% and moderately favorable and unfavorable was nil. There was significant increase in the level of knowledge and attitude of the mothers of hospitalized underfive children between pre and posttest. The structured-teaching programme on scabies was carried out and the study has improved the knowledge and attitude of the mothers about scabies. Such teaching programme can be carried out in the hospital and community to improve the health of children and thereby can reduce the morbidity and mortality among the children of all age groups.
