Abstract

Samples of milted wheat straw (10g, Imm) with 20ml watte were taken in triplicate and subjected to no heat treatment (T1), steaming for 30 min (T2) aan dutoclaving (121°C; 30 min T3; incoulated with the mycelial inoculum of Ganoderma lucidum 870 and incubated at 27°±1C. Similarly chaffed wheat straw (approx. 3 cm) autoclaved (T4) inoculated and incubated. The fermentation continurd for Od, 20d and 40d. It was observed that the untreated straw (T1) could not be colonised by G. lucidum and there was no degradation of lignin. Highest loss of total DM, cellulose and hemicellulose and lignin was sbserved wiih T2. However, maximum increase in IVDMD (42%) and minimum loss of DM (10%) was observed in T3. Chaffed wheat straw (T4) showed results comparable to milled straw indicating that milling was unnecessary. Similarly, the results indicated that the steaming did not increase the efficiency of fermentation process over autoclaving.
