Abstract

A lactation experiment of 119 d duration was conducted to study the effect of two levels of undegradahle protein (UDF) on the milk production performance of crosshred cows. Twelve lactating cows (10.5i:0.79 kg milk/d) were divided into two comparable groups (A and B) of six each, based on lactation number, milk yield and days after calving. Cows In group A were fed a concentrate mixture-I which contained 35% of CP as UDP, while those in group B were fed a concentrate mixture-II containing 55% of CP as UDP. Both the concentrate mixtures were iso-nitrogenous and iso-caloric. The animals in both the groups were fed ad lib paddy straw as the major source of roughage aiong with 5 kg para grass to each animal. The total group milk yield and average yield/d in group B (7004 kg and 9.81 kg) were higher (P<0.05) thanthoseingroup A (6069kgand 8.50 kg). Even though the UDP intake in both the groups of animals was higher than (he ARC recommended le.vel of 80 g for such category of animals provision of higher amounts of UDP resulted in better productive performance. There was no significant difference in the digestibility of nutrients between the groups. The level of UDP in the diet did not affect the milk composition. The study indicated that the requirement of UDP for lactating cows producing about 10 kg mllk/d and on a feeding regimen with paddy stra was major source of roughage may be much higher than the recommendations of ARC (1980) for such category of animals.
