Abstract

Solanum melongena fruits are available year-round and are part of routine diet. In the present study, free radical scavenging activity of six local varie ties of Solanum melongena fruit was determined by various in vitro mode ls. Amongst six varieties, methanolic extract of Kalpa variety showed IC50 values 36.67±0.36μg/ml, 75.58±0.03μg/ml, 39.25±0.12μg/ml to scavenge DPPH., OH., O2.- generation, respective ly and also exhibited highest activity towards reducing power assay. Vardha variety pos sessed highe st NO. scavenging act ivity. Total phenolic and flavonoid content in Kalpa was found 161.83±0.01mg GAE/g and 423.5±0.02mg QE/g, respectively. Soluble protein and total carbohydrate content was also found higher in Kalpa variety. HPLC and LC-MS analysis indicated the presence of quercetin and sinapic acid in the varieties, with Kalpa variety having maximum amount. This study explains that Solanum melongena vegetable could be considered as an important, cheap, easily available source of natural bioactive components with antioxidant property.
