Abstract

Calcifying odontogenic cysts (COC) are rare odontogenic tumors with lot of controversies about their terminology and classification. In 2005 they have been renamed as calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) and Dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT). As many as 7 classifications have been proposed by various authors. The definition has been changed twice by the WHO and still this definition also debatable. The presence of combined lesions along with other benign neoplasms, presentation as cystic and solid lesions, further adds to the controversies and confusions. Besides these the rarity of the lesion with few reported cases adds to the difficulty in establishing strict criteria. In this literature we present all the classifications proposed till date and discuss the controversies about this rare and interesting odontogenic tumor.
