Abstract

The present study is foremost attempt to quantify the extent of iron-ore export instability and export market concentration for the State of Goa over five decades. Our rich data controls for two major time-interventions, firstly the pre-and post-Statehood period and the pre-and post-economic reform periods and tries to evaluate the relation between export market concentrations has on export instability in a developed region of an emerging economy. Our analysis reveals that the impact of geographic concentration of exports on instability is large while the magnitude of influence of the instability is relatively much less. We find that although the geographic concentration of the state‖s iron-ore export has severely reduced over the yearsdue to the exploration of the new markets, the Goa‖s export market remains highly geographically concentrated. Goa‖s export major destination-wise instability reveal that instead on competing in terms of productivity and low operating costs with competitions firms, the focus of local exporters have been on leveraging the natural advantage of geographic proximity and its attributable lower transportation costs. More importantly, we find some evidence that export market concentration in developing economies influence export instability in tandem with the literature.
