Abstract

The infrared and Raman spectra of Bis(nicotinic acid) hydrogen perchlorate 2(C6H5NO2)H+(ClO4) were recorded at room temperature and the assignment of vibrational modes of the observed wave numbers was done. In the Bis (nicotinic acid) the cation has different conformations. The presence of carboxyl group has been observed in the twisted form. The perchlorate anion shows symmetry and sandwiched between bi layers of nicotinic acid. The wave number assignments have been made for the functional groups, viz. COO, N-H, C-C-N, O-C=O, ClO2 and C-H. One of the two amino acid residues remains in the zwitter ionic form while the other residue exists in the cationic form. The Td symmetry of the (ClO4) anion has been found to be lowered to C2v corresponding to ClO2 group. Fermi resonance also has been observed. Factor group analysis has been made and the numbers of vibrational modes have been calculated. The tentative assignments of the observed bands are given.
