Phytochemical Screening, Anti-Bacterial and Anti-oxidant Activities of some Aerial parts extracts in Atriplex halimus L., from Ouargla (Algeria)

Abstract

The aims of this study are the phytochemical screening of some secondary metabolites, the evaluation of the antibacterial activity of the (methylene chloride, ethyl acetate and butanol) extracts, and antioxidant activities of the aerial parts of Atriplex halimus L., harvested in the south east of Algeria. Extracts were prepared from the aerial part by aqueous and organic extraction using a Soxhlet and cold maceration. Methylene chloride extract has proven to be the most potent compared to the others. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of (polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins,). Antimicrobial activity was achieved by the disc diffusion method and tested against six types of Gram negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The antioxidant activity was evaluated in vitro by the DPPH method. The study of antioxidant activity has shown that the greatest activity is obtained with methylene chloride, with an IC50 equal to 11.75mg/ml, followed by ethyl acetate extract, a value of 23.20mg/ml and finally the butanol extract which seems the least effective with an IC50 of 57.16mg/ml. EC50s are inversely proportional to the Trolox equivalent, whose low values reflect a high Trolox equivalent value.
