Deposits and advances: A comparative analysis of Indian commercial banks Dr. Sharma Nishi Assistant Professor, University Institute of Applied Management Sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh Online published on 7 September, 2012. Abstract Lending and borrowing are the primary functions of every financial institute. The pattern of deposits and advances is one of the major determinants of profitability and risk management of financial sector. In India banking sector is a forefront of financial sector and therefore its operations have far reaching impact on the economy. In this context, the present paper attempts to study the deposits and advances generated by Indian scheduled commercial banks during a period of 11 years from 2000–01 to 2010–11. The analysis has been done through nine different ratios concerning with cash, credit, investment, loan etc. The study also investigates whether different banking groups have similar pattern of deposit and advances or their ownership led to some significant changes among them. The study is expected to be helpful in understanding the current practices of cash flow in different banks and assisting them to rationalise their financing activities tailored as per the needs of contemporary world.
