Abstract

Deep breathing exercise is found to be effective in reducing physiological parameters among patients with acute coronary syndrome. The main aim of the study was to identify the effect of deep breathing exercise on selected physiological parameters among patients with acute coronary syndrome at Sri Ramakrishna hospital, Coimbatore. Quasi experimental pre test post test with control group design was adopted in this study. By using purposive sampling technique 41 samples were selected, and 18 were assigned to the experimental group and 23 patients were assigned to the control group. The demographic profile was collected from the patients with acute coronary syndrome. Pre test was done. The heart rate, respiration, blood pressure and oxygen saturation were assessed from admission to till discharge. Deep breathing exercise was given to patients with acute coronary syndrome in the experimental group for 10 minutes twice daily from admission to till discharge. Control group received routine treatment. Post test was conducted for both experimental and control group of each time after deep breathing exercise. The mean level of heart rate and standard deviation in the experimental and control group after intervention were 89.05 and 97.78, 2.77 and 3.18 respectively. The mean difference was 8.73. The calculated ‘t’ value 9.19 was greater than the table value 2.57 at 0.05 level of significance. The mean level of respiratory rate and standard deviation in the experimental and control group after intervention were 21.39 and 26.52, 1.34 and 1.38 respectively. The mean difference was 5.13. The calculated ‘t’ value 10.91 was greater than the table value 2.57 at 0.05 level of significance. Hence, it was concluded that deep breathing exercise is an effective intervention in reducing the heart rate and respiratory rate and not effective in reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure among patients with acute coronary syndrome.
